Government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis says PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis falsely claimed on a national radio interview that Mr. Xylouris is the prime minister’s “koumbaros,” and urges a retraction or risk aligning with extreme-party tactics.

Pavlos Marinakis, deputy minister to the prime minister and government spokesman, issued a statement criticizing PASOK president Nikos Androulakis for what Marinakis called a false claim made during a national radio interview.

According to Marinakis, in his appearance on realfm 97.8 with hosts Nikos Chatzinikolaou and Antonis Dellatolas, Androulakis alleged that Mr. Xylouris is the prime minister’s koumbaros (a traditional Greek term often translated as “best man” or a close familial sponsor). Marinakis said this assertion is “absolutely false.” The spokesman called on the leader of the main opposition to retract the statement. If Androulakis does not withdraw it, Marinakis warned, he will have confirmed—yet again—that he is adopting more of the “bad habits” associated with the extreme parties with which he sometimes cooperates.
