From Nov 28 to Dec 7 Athens will temporarily seal 14 food-and-drink establishments for exceeding or using public space without a permit, as municipal police step up inspections under Mayor Haris Doukas.

Athens Municipality: New temporary closures of businesses for illegal outdoor seating

The Municipality of Athens is proceeding with a new round of temporary closures for food and beverage establishments (K.Y.E.). Municipal Police teams are intensifying daily inspections for illegal outdoor seating, fulfilling Mayor Haris Doukas’s commitment to protect public space and accessibility.

  • Period and number of closures: From 28 November to 7 December, 14 establishments (K.Y.E.) will be temporarily sealed due to exceeding the permitted use of public space or using public space without a license.

  • Geographic breakdown by municipal community:

  • 2 establishments in the 1st Municipal Community

  • 5 establishments in the 2nd Municipal Community

  • 3 establishments in the 3rd Municipal Community

  • 3 establishments in the 4th Municipal Community

  • 1 establishment in the 7th Municipal Community

  • Duration of closures:

  • 4 K.Y.E. will be sealed for 10 days

  • 1 K.Y.E. will be sealed for 8 days

  • 1 K.Y.E. will be sealed for 7 days

  • 2 K.Y.E. will be sealed for 6 days

  • 2 K.Y.E. will be sealed for 5 days

  • 1 K.Y.E. will be sealed for 4 days

  • 2 K.Y.E. will be sealed for 3 days

  • 1 K.Y.E. will be sealed for 1 day

The Municipality of Athens is applying stricter penalties and fines under a new regulatory decision governing the occupation and use of public spaces by shops and businesses.
